Conceived by fulfilling a gap in the market for a reliable diver's watch, the Fifty Fathoms featured high water resistance, a robust protecting crown system, an automatic winding movement, legible luminescent markings and a rotating bezel with with timing markings.;The present example is the very sought after Milspec 1 with a humidity tester at 6 o’clock. It displays other military specifications such as a three part body case, a diamond at 12 o'clock on the revolving bezel. The inside case back displays "Rayville S.A", denoting the watch was made for the American Market. While this watch does display military specifications, research shows that it was made for civilian use.;An even more interesting feature is the "double Swiss" designation at 6 o'clock. Like Rolex's "Double Swiss Underline" reference 6239, we can surmise that the bezel had originally obscured the Swiss signature. As a result, Blancpain had to print it again, as to make it legible. This theory makes particular sense as the watch, was made for the American market, hence the importance of having a "Swiss" signature for importation reasons.;Research shows that the present watch is the only Milspec 1 with this dial configuration to appear on the auction market.;The present watch has furthermore been displayed at the Fifty Fathoms exhibition commemorating the 275th anniversary of the brand.

Developed in the beginning of the 1950s under the helm of Jean-Jacques Fiechter with the French Combat Diving School, its name derives from the watch's waterproof ability. It can be submerged up to Fifty Fathoms, or 91.45 meters underwater.;Since the release of Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain has released a variety of versions. While some were made for civilian use, others were issued to the military. The Barracuda model is distinguished by its two-tone numerals, which this model is best known for. It was originally issued to the American, German and Polish military.;The present watch, confirmed by Blancpain as being issued to the Polish military, is preserved in excellent condition. This is also apparent by the hand-engraved “MW”, which indicates the watch was delivered to the Polish navy. The dial is preserved in excellent condition, and the tritium still glows under a black light. The bezel is preserved in particularly good condition, and is free of visible cracks.

Needing to properly equip their personnel, they were unable to find a suitable dive watch that could survive the harsh conditions of their underwater missions. Captain Robert Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud were in charge of the new unit, and decided to design a watch that met their specific requirements. After approaching several brands, Blancpain’s CEO Jean-Jacques Fiechter - a passionate diver himself – agreed to produce the watch under the name Fifty Fathoms – named after the greatest depth that a combat diver was believed able to withstand at the time. The watch combined cutting edge features such as an anti-magnetic and water-resistant case, a screw down case back, a ‘double O-ring crown system’, an automatic movement and a rotating bezel. Extremely robust and reliable, it was truly designed by military professionals, and was soon selected by other militaries around the world for their diving units. Today, Blancpain’s Fifth Fathoms stands out as an icon not only for its historical significance as being the first ‘modern’ dive watch available, released in 1953, but also for the large case and easily viewed black dial with large luminous indexes and hands. The present example is in excellent condition, with a gorgeous black lacquered dial and luminous indexes that have turned a warm light brown adding to its overall appeal.
