John Moore & Son, Clerkenwell, 1858. the cast iron frame measuring 82cms x 107.5cms x 50.7cms (2ft 8.25ins x 3ft 6.5ins x 1ft 8ins) with acorn finials to the tapering pillars terminating in elongated baluster feet, set with five pairs of screwed vertical bars to carry the wheelwork, signed on the brass barrel cap 'Made by John Moore & Sons, Clerkenwell, London 1858' and again on the 6.5 inch silvered minute-hand setting dial, the subsidiary hour dial with Roman numerals and blued steel hand, the three train movement with three wooden barrels, each measuring 10 inches in diameter and with rope drive attached to pulleys mounted within the body of the building, with bevelled gearing to the two skeletonised Roman chapter rings mounted above, the going train with maintaining power to the jewelled deadbeat escapement and very substantial wooden rod pendulum 2.12m in length and 5cms in width terminating in a very heavy cast bob 38cms in diameter, the hour and quarters struck via independent racks..At each quarter, a pair of cast white metal figures of blacksmiths 43cms high, with painted clothes strike a horse-shoe on an anvil with a pair of sledgehammers to sound the quarters, (the anvil marked 'Harper 4006' and the sound emanating from a pair of bells mounted below the stand), further set with a single figure to the right hand side striking the hours on a mounted bronze ships bell marked 'Leighton'(the bell 8.25 inches high with a 10 inch mouthpiece, clapper intact)..The whole raised on a stand measuring 133cms x 107cms x 51cms (4ft 4.5ins x 3ft 6ins x 1ft 8ins) with two side brackets to support the automata figures..The frame 82cms x 107.5cms x 50.7cms (2ft 8.25ins x 3ft 6.5ins x 1ft 8ins)
