Thomas Tompion, London, number 244;The case surmounted by a very substantial tied-foliate-bud handle on circular pommels over a caddy top applied with four gilt metal pierced foliate mounts and a moulded cornice, the sides with silk-backed cast gilt-brass sound frets and rectangular glazed panels, the front door with matching sound fret over a pair of (replaced) gilt brass escutcheons, on a moulded base and block feet, the gilt brass rectangular dial measuring 7.75 inches by 6.75 inches, the upper part centrally signed 'Thomas Tompion LONDINI Fecit' flanked by twin subsidiary dials, the left for rise-and-fall regulation, the right for Strike/Not strike, over the silvered Roman and Arabic dial with half-quarter markers enclosing the finely matted centre with shaped chamfered mock pendulum aperture and blued steel hands, secured via three latched dial feet to the substantial frontplate, the plates united by seven knopped pillars, each with four delicate ring turnings, both going and striking trains with chain fusees, the former terminating in a pivotted verge escapement, the latter with rack strike on a bell, the quarter repeat work mounted on the cut-out frontplate and actuated from either side of the case via a pair of hinged blued-steel L-shaped levers;41cms (16ins) high

Tompion on the potence-plate, and with later inscription 'Tho Tompion LONDON,'and traces of scratched 'No.1' also on the potence-plate, fine balance-cock pierced and engraved with a tri-partite design with small irregular foot, 3-arm steel balance, the balance-spring pinned by square wedge, silver regulation disc, four large tapering Egyptian pillars (two engraved, two left plain) silver dial with Roman and Arabic chapters, signed engraved centre, lacking hands, polished silver inner hinged case, outer square-hinged silver case of slightly later date.46mm.

The dial signed for Thomas Tompion The case with overhanging cornice supported on barley twist columns over a convex throat moulding, the long trunk door of good figure and set on a panel base and bun feet, the ten inch square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels around a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, each five minute numeral sitting within the minute band along with the half-quarter markers, later signed along the lower edge 'Tho Tompion, London', the finely matted centre with small subsidiary seconds dial and chamfered date aperture, the substantial weight driven movement with shaped plates to accommodate the three trains united by five knopped and ringed pillars, with anchor escapement and inside countwheel strike on a single bell for the hours and furthermore playing one of two tunes on a 2.5inch diameter pinned barrel on seventeen bells and thirty two hammers, (the music activated every three hours via a countwheel mounted on the backplate, or released on demand)..2.01m (6ft 7ins) high

The verge movement is running at the time of cataloguing. Dial has some slight scuffs but overall is in good condition. The inner case with scuffs and indentations throughout. The outer case with a couple of small indentations and scuffs throughout, there is also a small crack to the bezel at the 7 o'clock position.

Descrizione :
It is currently fully wound and not running, but will probably run if cleaned. It is lacking a minute hand, and has a replaced hour hand. The dial and outer case are circa 1720. The dial appears to be of good quality with only surface wear, minor scuffing and wear due to age. The case is also of high quality, although with modest rubbing to the figures. The inner case with dents and now lacking shutter for winding hole.

Over the last century, they have educated the public using interactive and hands on exhibits on topics ranging from the sciences to agriculture, energy and technology. From 1942 until the 1980s, the museum's Hall of Timekeeping, sponsored by the Elgin Watch Company gave the public an overview the history of horology. The exhibit was closed in the 80s due to fire damage. The museum later organized an exhibition called Time which was on view from 2001 until 2004. This exhibit included timepieces from the Rockford Time Museum, the City of Chicago National Time Museum as well as private collectors and timepieces owned by the museum itself..Julius Rosenwald, the Chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Company was a founder of the museum and in the 1920s donated $3 million to convert the old Palace of Fine Arts into an interactive museum based on the model of the Munich, Deutsches Museum.
