Description : Dial: pink Caliber: cal. 13''' mechanical, 25 jewels Movement number: 862'536 Case: 18k pink gold, snap on case back Case number: 624'970 Closure: 18k pink gold buckle Size: 33 mm diameter Signed: case, dial and movement Box: no Papers: no Accessories: Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the date of sale on April 13th 1942 Catalogue Note Reference 1436 stands as Patek Philippe's first split-seconds chronograph wristwatch produced in series. Launched in 1938, this model served as a precise "tool watch" for timing horse and automobile races, as well as scientific experiments. Considered one of the firm's finest creations, it boasts a rattrapante chronograph mechanism encased within a compact 33-millimeter case. Approximately 140 examples of this model were made, predominantly in yellow gold. Pink gold versions were exceedingly rare, with less than 9 publicly known examples surviving, and even fewer featuring a pink dial like the present watch. This rarity, combined with its infrequent appearance on the market, has elevated the reference to mythical status. The pink gold case, crafted by master casemaker Emile Vichet, bears his mark—a number 9 within a key—punched inside the caseback. Equipped with the caliber 13 130 CCR, meticulously finished by Victorian Piguet, the watch's true beauty lies in its extraordinary pink dial confirmed by the Extract from the Archives. It features the correct pre-1948 ‘long’ Patek Philippe & Co. Genève signature, retaining both its comma and accent, along with applied pink gold Roman and baton hour indexes and feuille hands. The elegant reference 1436, with its high-quality and intricate movement, undoubtedly represents a pinnacle in the evolution of technical wristwatches—a domain in which Patek Philippe has been a leader for generations.

Description : Manufacturer: Patek Philippe;Year: 1960;Reference No: 1436;Movement No: 868'993;Case No: 2'616'385;Material: 18K yellow gold;Calibre: Manual, cal. 13'', 25 jewels;Bracelet/Strap: Alligator;Clasp/Buckle: 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe pin buckle stamped PPCo;Dimensions: 33mm. Diameter;Signed: Case, dial, movement and buckle signed;Accessories: Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1960 and its subsequent sale on 11 July 1961.;Catalogue Essay;Reference 1436 is the first split seconds chronograph wristwatch that Patek Philippe ever produced in a series. Shortly after the launch of reference 130, Patek Philippe immediately received requests to produce a wristwatch capable of timing two separate events. The split seconds mechanism was particularly useful for technical purposes, such as timing horse or automobile races, along with measuring scientific experiments.;Thus, in 1938, reference 1436 was born. The model is possibly one of the most elegant references ever produced by the firm, with the rattrapante chronograph mechanism housed within the confines of a 33 millimeter case. Research suggests that approximately 140 examples were produced throughout the reference's approximate 33 years of manufacture, meaning an average of 4 watches were produced each year. This is an exceedingly limited number, even by the production standards of the mid to late 20th century. The present watch is one of only approximately 25 known examples to be cased in yellow gold.;While the first generation cases were produced by Emile Vichet, later generation cases, such as the present watch were made by Ponti, Gennari & Cie. Furthermore, second generation examples featured a co-axial button within the crown to split and reunited the split chronograph hands.;This particular example is preserved in remarkable condition, with a strong hallmark between the lugs. The case has developed a beautiful layer of patina over time, and displays strong, defined lugs. The present dial also marked a change from Patek Philippe's usual design code by omitting the "base" text on the outer register. Considered an "experimental" dial, it also features "open" subsidiary registers, as opposed to earlier examples which are "closed". Interestingly, this dial configuration is almost identical to the watch's immediate sibling, reference 1436 with case number 2'616'386 and movement number 868'994. The latter is only distinguished by its shortened baton markers and "Tiffany & Co" signature on the dial.;Yet, the caseback is possibly the most fascinating element of the watch. It is inscribed "Baalim Derby-Sieger 1961", which translates to "Baalim Derby-Winner 1961". The engraving most probably refers to the Deutsches Derby race in Germany, Hamburg. In 1961, the winning horse was indeed Baalim.;As stated on the Extract from the Archives, the owner purchased the watch nine days after the horse's victory on July 2, 1961. Baalim's successful victory without a doubt enabled his owner, Countess Spreti, to receive a windfall. It is fair to believe that the watch was a generous gift from the owner, to someone involved with the race. While we may never know if the watch originally belonged to the winning jockey Gerhard Streit, or even the successful horse breeder, we are certain that the "split seconds" mechanism is inextricably tied to the sport of racing, and by extension, the victory itself.;This example is not only an incredibly well-preserved watch. It is also a relic of sorts, preserving the memory of an event which undoubtedly changed the course of its original owner's life.

Originally launched in 1938, the model was used as a "tool watch" to time horse or automobile racing, along with scientific experiments. The reference is possibly one of the finest watches ever produced by the firm, with the rattrapante chronograph mechanism housed within the confines of a 33 millimeter case. Predominantly produced in yellow gold, the model was very rarely cased in pink gold. In fact, research suggests that less than 9 examples are known to gave survived in pink gold, with exceedingly few examples featuring a pink dial, such as the present watch. Its rarity, and infrequent appearance on the market has caused the reference to cultivate a mythical status.;This watch combines, and displays, the rarest and most desirable components of the reference. An early first series example, this watch is nothing short of breathtaking and stunning. The pink gold case, confirmed by the Extract from the Archives and made by Emile Vichet, is preserved in amazing condition with sharp facets and finishes throughout. A hallmark is clearly punched to the left band, attesting to its crisp nature. The unsigned crown is correct and original. Early examples featured a crown that would act as a button to split and reunite the two seconds chronograph hands. It was only later that the crown was fitted with a co-axial push button the reunite the split seconds function.;Yet, the beauty of the watch lies in the extraordinary pink dial. The correct long signature is present, and all printing is intact and legible. The hands and numerals have aged with light patina, giving the watch so much character and history.;Rarer still, this example is complete with all its original accessories such as its original certificate, bill of sale confirming the watch was cased in pink gold, envelope and fitted presentation box. The bill of sale furthermore states that the watch was sold to Monsieur Victorio Luzuriaga, c/o Instruments de Physique for 1900 Swiss Francs in 1946. A scion of the Luzuriaga dynasty, Monsieur Victorio Luzuriaga was a member of an entrepreneurial industrial family. Making his fortune through land, machinery and technical factories, Luzuriaga was a great businessman whose wealth was diversified in the coal, naval and oil industries. One can only imagine the plethora of uses for a split-seconds chronograph wristwatch in Monsieur Luzuriaga's world of business and development.

Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import this lot into another country..Provenance.According to Patek Philippe's original sales invoice, the present watch was sold to Mr. Victorio Luzuriaga at the Société d'Instruments de Physique in Geneva or SIP..Victorio Luzuriaga Iradi (San Sebastian, Spain, 1882-1960).Victorio Luzuriaga was one of Spain's most celebrated and prestigious industrialists, an enterprising, tireless worker who contributed much to the development of his home region, the Basque country..After the death of his father in 1928 he took over the management of their metallurgical firm Javier Luzuriaga & Son in Pasaia, immediately expanding the line of production. The most important development took place after the Spanish Civil War, when Luzuriaga found a solution to the considerable shortage of fuel by launching the production of gas generators for cars and trucks - the company's first step into the automobile industry. Astilleros Luzuriaga SA was founded with Victorio Luzuriaga as president..The accrued need for molded and laminated steel led to the acquisition of José de Orueta SA but due to the deficiency of electricity, the output was very limited. The ingenious entrepreneur Don Victorio mastered also this obstacle by purchasing and reactivating a decommissioned hydroelectric plant in Hernani in 1945 and within a few days, the problem was solved..With the increasing number of motor cars in Spain following World War II, Luzuriaga concentrated on large scale production of supplies for this industry which, in order to satisfy his customers high quality standards, required the acquisition of new machinery impossible to obtain or produce in Spain..It can safely be assumed that Victorio Luzuriaga used the high precision machinery of Société d'Instruments de Physique SIP in Geneva, enjoying international reputation already at the time. It was certainly also during one of his visits to SIP in Geneva that he ordered the present watch at Patek Philippe's prestigious salon, using his supplier's address for the invoice..Victorio Luzuriaga, a visionary of exquisite taste, was also one of the first entrepreneurs to recognize the touristic potential of the Balearic Islands. In 1943 he undertook a revolutionary project and acquired a finca, a large farm ground of over 1,350 hectares comprising amongst others a small village and a variety of plantations on the island of Mallorca, near the city of Palma. In collaboration with the famous mallorcan architect Francesc Casas Llompart the celebrated Hotel Maricel was build and opened its doors in 1950. At the time a meeting point for local and foreign high society, the Maricel hosted celebrities such as Montgomery Cliff, Errol Flynn, Silvia Hedges (co-owner of Benson and Hedges cigarettes), Cristobal Colon (descendant of the famous conquistador), Lord Swanson and, naturally, the Luzuriaga family, owners of the hotel and Astilleros Luzuriaga..SIP.The Société d'Instruments de Physique (SIP) was founded in 1862 by the scientists Auguste de la Rive and Marc Thury with the aim of developing and manufacturing scientific instruments..SIP Society of Instruments and Physique played a leading role in the development of high precision machines and tools, most notably with the introduction of the revolutionary machine à pointer or jig boring machine in 1921, a device capable of piercing items with the precision of one micron while eliminating the time-consuming steps of marking out and drilling. Part of an international group since 2006, ultra-precise machine tools and coordinate measuring systems for customers in the aerospace and precision machine industry are still sold under the brand name SIP..After SIP's relocation to larger premises, the factory building located at 8 rue des Vieux Grenadiers, adjacent to the prestigious Museum Patek Philippe, houses since the late 1990s the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO) and the Centre for Contemporary Art..View Lot Notes ›

Description : Manual winding movement running and chronograph functions are operating while cataloguing but the split hands need an adjustment as they are not always flying back properly. Dial has beautifully aged and is in very good condition. Light minor scuffs to the subsidiary dials, and in the centre of the dial. Two light spottings between 5 and 6 o'clock. Hard enamel to the Patek signature and the tachometer scale are beautifully raised. Hallmarks are clear. Crown as been replaced. Case might have been gently polished once, but this has been done nicely and hasn't affected the proportions of the case nor the hallmarks. The Extract from the Archives confirms the production of this watch with a silvered dial, raised gold Breguet numerals and tachometer-scale. Overall the watch is a stunning example of the reference.
