Most certainly unpolished and worn with extreme care, the lugs are thick and the case crisp.;We are witnessing a current trend for larger and bulkier watches made from the 1950s and on, however the present timepiece is proof that a full bodied and unpolished 34mm case can have immense wrist presence and nothing to shy away from its larger counterparts.;Reference 1526 is a historically important timepiece as it is not only the very first serially produced perpetual calendar wristwatch, launched in 1941 and in production until 1952, but also a timepiece whose design set the benchmark for what a classic perpetual calendar wristwatch should look like!;The simplicity of the “Calatrava” style case and serene silver dial is counterbalanced by the magnificently hand decorated movement that mechanically calculates the length of each month throughout the year, whilst also accounting for leap years. Only four pink gold examples of the reference 1526 left Patek Philippe's workshops each year over the 11 years this reference was in production.;The strong case, long thick lugs and thin bezel enhance the impression of size and wrist presence. The dial is in magnificent condition and provides an elegant and serene contrast with the pink gold case. Sold in 1953 when the reference 2497 (the successor to the reference 1526) was already launched, the present gem is most certainly amongst the very last reference 1526 models ever made.;The present lot from an important private collection has had only two owners since its production. The day and month discs are in English and an extra set of discs in French also accompany this piece.;Housed in a superbly preserved pink gold case, the present lot fuses with a certain euphotic serenity and will appeal to the collector looking for not only an exceptionally well preserved and extremely rare timepiece, but also one of the first perpetual calendar wristwatches ever made.

Further accompanied by a Patek Philippe presentation box, Patek Philippe pouch and outer packaging..Reference 1526 was produced from 1940 to 1952, and is known as one of the most elegant complicated models produced by Patek Philippe. Its scarce production also makes it one of the rarest - it is estimated that a little over 200 examples were made. The majority were cased in yellow gold, with a small amount being cased in pink gold. A single unique piece was cased in stainless steel, and can now be seen at Patek Philippe's prestigious watch museum in Geneva..Reference 1526 cases were made by Emile Vichet, who also made cases for the references 1518 and 130. The earliest dials featured a subsidiary dial with the date on the inner ring and the seconds on the outside, as a double railway, or chemin de fer. After 1943, the date ring was moved to the outside and the seconds on the inside. Towards the end of production in the late 1940's, the subsidiary dial only had a railway around the date, and the subsidiary seconds were indexed around the moon phase or the bottom half of the moon phase..Reference 1526 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, first edition, page 215.

Manual winding movement running and calendar functions are operating while cataloguing. The spectacular unrestored dial is in excellent original condition with the hard enamel signature nicely raised. With the original winding crown, the case retains its original proportions and seems to have been hardly used. Fresh to the market, it has survived in very good overall condition with well defined hallmarks. The Extract from the Archives confirms production of the watch in 18k rose gold with raised hour markers in gold.

A very nice example. The movement is running and the calendar is advancing properly at the time of cataloguing, however it may require service soon. The dial appears original with some spotting between 7 and 8 o'clock next to the moon-phase aperture, and also two small scuffs just above the day and month apertures. One of these smudges is not visible in the catalogue photograph due to the lighting, for a better view, please ask the department for further photographs. The signature appears original and is fully intact. The dial has likely not been touched. The case shows good definition throughout, with a very crisp 18k mark to the outside of the case back that is only very slightly rubbed at the top, and a crisp goldmark on the band. There are light surface scuffs throughout, the most noticeable being above the crown on the band, but the watch is overall in very nice, original condition..The strap of this watch contains endangered species, please refer to Important Notices for further information.
