Launched in 1947, the Dato Compax was Rolex’s first and only triple calendar chronograph wristwatch fitted with a water-resistant Oyster case. Collectors nicknamed the Dato Compax “Jean-Claude Killy”, after the three-time French Olympic ski champion who was often seen wearing a reference 6236 similar to the present lot. Over the years, Rolex modified both the dial and case design, with the final in the series, the reference 6236, featuring a more modern, clean dial style, as well as a three piece case with larger bezel. Fresh to the auction market, this lot stands out for its incredibly preserved case, and its stunning dial with wonderful details such as the sunken and embossed gold ‘12’ and faceted square hour markers, which are complemented by the crisp blue of the outer date ring against the pristine, white grainé surface of the dial. Fitted with the original bracelet featuring a “big logo” Rolex clasp dated 4th quarter 1958 and straight end-links. The present lot is without doubt one of these horological UFO’s as it looks not only in excellent condition even though it was made close to 60 years ago but its design is a blueprint of contemporary vibrancy.;Launched in 1947, the reference 4767 Dato Compax was Rolex’s first triple calendar chronograph wristwatch fitted inside a water-resistant Oyster case. Between 1947 and 1962, a total of four different Oyster Dato Compax models were produced: references 4767, 5036, 6036 and 6236. Made in yellow and pink gold as well as stainless steel, the production run was very small for each variation. They received the nickname “Jean Claude Killy”, after the three-time Olympic champion who was seen wearing a reference 6236 like the present lot.;The present lot is in excellent condition with well-defined thick lugs and sharp angles, the silver dial is enticing and seductive with crisp blue date ring with the 6 and 9 numerals closed typical for this reference, the baton hands also set the benchmark for future Rolex chronographs, the double faceted and polished markers in relief and the gracefully aged luminous markers and hands that have turned a pleasing beige color consist of a cavalcade of details making the present lot a very seductive example of the reference 6236.

The movement is running at the time of cataloguing and the chronograph is functioning properly, however it may require service soon. The dial appears original and has a nice patina. The case shows scuffs from a moderate amount of wear, with some light pitting to the case back. The month corrector is in gilt brass and appears to be a replacement..The reference number 6236 is both between the lugs and on the inside of the case back. The serial numbers between the lugs appear to be hand-scratched rather than stamped, and read 576403.

The inside of the case back is numbered 6236 as well as between the lugs. The serial numbers between the lugs are 576430..The movement is running at the time of cataloguing, however it may require service soon. The chronograph is functioning, however it clears to just before the 12 o'clock point and will require service to function correctly. The calendar correctors are functioning correctly. The dial has been reprinted which is evident in the fonts used as well as the placement of the 31 in the date ring. The case back shows scuffs from wear.

Descrizione :
The watch is in nice overall condition. The movement is running and the chronograph appears to function and calendar appears to advance properly, however it could benefit from service soon. The movement is numbered 72C and 1718. The dial is nice and properly aged and all of the printing appears original. There are a few scratches toward 3 o'clock, near 10 o'clock and some very light spots throughout. The glass is rather scratched and should be replaced. The case shows signs of general wear and surface scuffs it could benefit from cleaning as well. The outside of the back has some light scratches and scuffs, but appears to have been significantly worn. The inside of the back is stamped 6236 and between the lugs is stamped 384242 and 6236. The expandable bracelet is stamped 71 to each end and the buckle is stamped 2 62.
