Catalogue Note Launched in 1952, the reference 2508 was the firms first time-only model to feature a waterproof case. It was released alongside its sister reference, the 2509, which featured subsidiary seconds. While the 2508 had center sweep seconds, both were mounted on Stern Freres made dials. In production from 1952 until 1960, the Taubert made case featured the same shape and proportions as the waterproof chronograph reference 1463. The model was produced in yellow and pink gold, as well as in stainless steel. This current example is in well preserved condition, with an attractively aged dial and case. The hard enamel signature is well defined and raised and the case retains equally strong proportions, with thick lugs and a strong hallmark on the case flank.

The reference 2592 is one such example of that. While at first glance it appears to be a standard round dress watch, a closer look reveals the complexity of its design. The watch features reverse hooded lugs, that are attached from the back of the case, so that the strap almost appears to float with negative space between the case and the top of the strap. In a watch that is hallmarked by its details, a closer look at the dial reveals the prestigious double-signature of Gübelin. Based in Lucerne, Switzerland – Gübelin has been a retailer for Patek Philippe for well over 100 years. Furthermore, the present 2592 is complete with its presentation box, original paperwork, and it’s Certificate of Origin stamped by the venerable retailer. Interestingly, the watch is accompanied by an additional service receipt from Gübelin for service performed in 1976. This lot was certainly a historically cherished item, as it is certainly unusual to a find a watch from this period with this much paperwork included.

With specially designed pushers on the left side of the case, the wearer is able to advance and reverse the hour hand in one-hour increments, thereby easily and precisely adjusting the watch for different time zones. This early first version features two hands on the center arbor. From March 1962, an extra hour hand was also available to enable two time zones to be indicated at the same time. It is estimated that the firm produced one hundred examples of this model, in yellow and pink gold, and with two and three hands. Watches similar to the present example, in yellow gold and featuring two hands, made up perhaps just over half of the complete production run. The inspiration for Patek Philippe's modern travel time wristwatches (references 5034 and 5134) is clearly drawn from the original reference 2597 and still features an independently adjustable jumping hour hand. Indeed, the watch was of such great importance and prestige to the house at the time of production that its retail list price was not dissimilar to that of a yellow gold cloisonné dial world time reference 2523. The reference 2597 is illustrated in Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Watches, First Edition, p. 184, and the Second Edition, pp. 238-239.

Launched in 1938, its 35 mm diameter was deemed substantial for its time. Tailored to meet the burgeoning interest in outdoor activities, the case was made in two parts, featuring a screw back and an additional dust cover. The cover provided protection against both humidity and dust. Notably, the two-part case with a protective cap was made by Taubert, a renowned manufacturer of waterproof cases since the late 19th century. Taubert also supplied cases for other significant Patek Philippe models, including the revered reference 1463 and 96A. Produced until 1952, the present timepiece boasts an 18k pink gold case featuring a silvered dial, and was recently serviced by Patek Philippe in November 2023.

For over forty years, this model remained in Patek's catalog, a testament to its enduring design and desirability, and it became one of the most popular models ever offered by the Geneva-based manufacturer. The 96 signified a departure from the brand's traditional naming conventions. Prior to its introduction, Patek Philippe identified watches solely by their case numbers, without assigning specific names to individual models or design families. Therefore, the adoption of reference 96 marked a significant shift in the brand's approach to cataloging their timepieces. This departure from past practice reflected Patek Philippe's recognition of the growing importance of branding and marketing in the evolving luxury watch industry. Traditionally, reference 96 is most commonly found in yellow gold, but it was also offered in pink gold, white gold, platinum, and steel, like the current example. The initial (1st) series of the Patek Philippe reference 96 was manufactured until early 1935, distinguished by its utilization of the LeCoultre 12-ligne caliber. Interestingly, this caliber was originally procured mainly for Gondolo pendant watches during the 1910s and 1920s but remained unused due to the economic repercussions of the Great Depression, which significantly impacted production at the time. Consequently, in the earliest iterations of ref. 96, such as this watch, with its movement number dating the movement to circa 1914, some examples lacked a small seconds dial, and the movement featured distinctive gold wheels and a 'snail' regulator, elements specifically crafted for Gondolo watches. Additionally, the current example is fitted with its original ‘sector’ dial, making this one of the earliest and most attractive Ref 96 to come to the public market.
