W for Winding
Unlike quartz watches, which work by using a battery, mechanical watches need winding: by hand, by turning the crown, or automatically by moving your wrist. No matter how you do it, winding a watch is essential to making it work.
Collector Square recommends that watches that need manual wounding should be wound daily, winding the watch twelve or so times before placing it on your bedside table each night.
Above, two watches that need manual wounding, Vulcain Cricket and Rolex Oyster Date Precision in stainless steel. On the right, two automatic watches : Breguet Type XX Aeronavale and Daytona watch in white gold by Rolex.
